Instructions

Q. What happened to the wonderfully written instructions that used to be here?

A. Oh they're here allright, but you'll be much better off letting the new Widget Wizard help you with individualized instructions for each blog server and widget type. Enjoy!

Comments

Q. Mister Linky's Comments with Linkies -- those are the coolest thing ever!

A. That's not a question, but thank you! It's either a comment system with Linkies built in or Linkies with comments built in... we're not so sure ourselves! :) It's the best thing since sliced bread, that much we know! If you are a Platinum Member this is something you can put in your template, and you're done! Whenever you make a new post, you have the option of telling Mister Linky whether it's part of a meme or not, and you're done! Just (1) get yourself upgraded to a Platinum membership and (2) click on over to the Widget Wizard... you can get started right away!

Notification

Q. How will I know when someone leaves their Linky?

A. Mister Linky's Gold members may choose to receive an e-mail message whenever someone enters a Linky on one of their posts. If you are a Gold member, visit the options page to set this up. If not, you may click here to become one.

Donations II

Q. Where did the donations banner go?

A. The donations concept has been replaced by the upgrade page. Payment is still strictly optional, of course, and always will be. Mister Linky's Original Auto Linkies will always be free.

Help Page

Q. What happened to the "help" page?

A. It went the way of the "about" page... but wasn't nearly funny enough to save.

Ever Linkes

Q. What the heck is an Ever Linky?

A. Ever, as in forever... If you have a Blogger blog, you know what a pain it is to add your Auto Linky code. So Mister Linky has come up with a better way. If you are a Gold Member you have a new way of adding Linkies to your blog. All you'll do is add some new code to your template and you'll never ever have to deal with code again -- I promise! Just (1) get yourself upgraded to a Gold membership and (2) click on over to the Widget Wizard... you can get started right away!

Red Text

Q. I've registered with Mister Linky but I still see the red text, "Blog owner: Please register for this service." What's up with that?

A. Once you register, you'll have a shiny new username that is the key to everything Linky. When you put Linky code into your post (the autolink.php script) you should use this new username after the "owner=" part. The easiest way to get your Linky script code is to go to the widgets page and then click on the New Linky button. NOTE: If you have old code that uses a different name, feel free to change the "owner=" to your new username, but be sure to send me both the old and new codes so I can fix everything up in the database and keep links from getting lost.

Membership

Q. What does the "membership" level mean?

A. Silver-level membership is available for only $5 per year.. Gold-level membership costs $10 per year. Platinum-level membership is a bargain at $20 per year, for all of the features available at that level. Membership has its privileges, of course, and those details now appear on the upgrade page.

Buttons

Q. How can I get a cool button to put on my template?

A. I've made up three of them, and maybe one of them would appeal to you. Just grab the script in the box and put it in your template somewhere. And thank you!

Old Names

Q. What if I've been using an owner id that's different from the user id I registered with?

A. Don't worry about a thing. Simply send Mister Linky the script tags you've been using. He'll send you back updated script tags that you should be using that will work with your new user id.

Old Script

Q. I still have the old "script.php" code in some of my posts.

A. This old code may continue to work, and I will make sure that it does -- for a while. But you're better off switching to the new way. The Widget Wizard will help you get set up. P.S. I'll be getting rid of script.php on May 1st, so be sure to switch to the autolink script, or... better yet, why not upgrade and enjoy the new everlink technology!

About Page

Q. What happened to the "about" page?

A. I realized there just wasn't that much to talk "about"... here's the Mister Linky story, in case you missed it...

I was a quiet child. I always did well in school. What? Not that beginning?

Well, OK. Mister Linky was born out of my overwhelming laziness. Yes, it's true! I would go visiting around to other Thursday Thirteeners and they'd come back and visit me and they'd want to get linked up. That's how it works, after all! And I would dutifully spend an hour or more -- oh yes, no kidding! -- clicking through Blogger profiles and finding the links and editing my HTML... that is, if Blogger was even speaking to me!

Feh, enough. Well what if there was a way to add everybody's links automatically? Well necessity met invention and the rest is history.

And so I started using it myself and I think it was KDubs who first asked if she could use it, and then a bunch of other people joined in and then it just started spreading on its own. Made it a little difficult to make sure people were getting the code right, but it all seems to be working so far.

And here we are. I want to thank everyone who has made a donation. It really does help to make sure there is plenty of bandwidth to go around, that the lights keep shining on the database, and that the code keeps rolling along. Thank you!

Exporting Links

It's been brought to my attention that there are Linky users that wish to have a more permanent record of their links, beyond the end of a meme. They wish to take their links and save them as HTML into their post, so that Technorati and Google will treat them as a permanent part of the text of the post. If you'd like to do this, here's what you do. First, log in to Mister Linky. Second, sit back and relax. At the end of the meme, when you're done collecting links, go to your blog. Below your linky you'll see this message:

Blog Owner: If you wish to export this list to HTML, click here.

Note, only YOU will see this message on your blog. Everyone else will only see this message on their OWN blog. And if you don't ever want to use this feature and you don't ever want to see this message on your blog, click the Options link at the top of the screen and look for widget settings.

Anyway, when the meme is over you can click on that export link and get the HTML for your links. You can then go into your post and replace the Linky script with this HTML. The links will then be a permament part of that post, forever and ever.

Special Instructions for various blogging systems

WordPress

1. To add the header script, go to your administration page and click on the "Pressentation" button. Next, click on the "Theme Editor" tab, and then on the "Header" link to edit that file. Locate the <head> tag and right after that you can add the script containing the header.js stuff. Just be sure you don't stick it in the middle of something else. Making it the first thing after the <head> tag works nicely.

2. You can put the autolink script anywhere in any post. But if you're using the "visual rich editor" the system won't let you do this. All you need to do is go to the administration page and click on the "Users" link, and at the bottom of the page un-check the "Use the visual rich editor" button and then click on the "Update Profile" button. Now you're free to put that script, the one with the autolink.php stuff, in any post.
